Tired of lost socks and missing bras? Messy, overstuffed dressers are typical – who doesn’t have them? The problem is finding a way to prevent one small misstep from turning into a cluttered disaster.

We want that brand-new dresser that you purchased at our Modani Furniture stores to retain its original dazzle, and the best way to do so is by keeping it mess-free. In honor of Lost Sock Memorial Day, we’ve written a guide to maintaining bedroom furniture that is neat and clear of clutter.

These tips and craft projects make tidying up a breeze and finding clothes in a rush very easy to do.

Start with Empty Drawers

Anytime one starts a project, one must begin at the very beginning. With home organization, that means clearing out the clutter. Try removing everything from your drawers so you can access just how much space you have, how many items can comfortably fit in there, and how you’d like to place them. Would it be better to fold or roll? Should you hang sweaters or would it be better just to store jeans? Either way, a clear drawer is a clean slate for something better to come.

Elise Larson over at “A Beautiful Mess” has a home that has a mostly neutral home décor, so found a way to add a funky surprise by lining her vintage dresser drawers with cool, patterned fabric. You can recycle your favorite pair of jeans or buy scraps of cloth from a nearby craft store. You only need five supplies to transform any bedroom storage unit into a work of art: Tacky Glue, fabric scissors, a small paintbrush, and Mod Podge.

Declutter Your Dresser

Dresser drawers are a great spot to store T-shirts, tank tops, socks, and any unmentionables. Unfortunately, homeowners can get a bit carried away, saving everything they can into one confined space, eventually breaking down the drawer’s structure.

After you’ve removed every item from the drawer, ask yourself which items would you wear again. Keep only the ones that are still in style or that you plan to keep wearing over and over again, then place them back in the drawer. If not, throw it away and declutter.

Group Clothing By Categories

Remember your mother teaching you to separate your white clothing from the coloreds? Apply a similar method towards decluttering your closet. Dedicate one drawer to tops, another to bras and underwear, and so on.  Create various categories that are easy for you to remember and sort your clothing accordingly.

There are multiple ways to categorize your clothing; some by colors, some by styles – whatever is most convenient to you.

How about creating dividers? One expert, Rea at Home 4 Sweet Home, has the most uncomplicated solution to this problem: turn old file accordion holder into underwear organizers.  A few small snips can turn this used office supply into a lifesaver for when you’re running late to work on a Monday morning.

Stash Your Bulkier Items Elsewhere

Bulky clothing like jeans or sweaters can take way too much space. It is better to move them to the closet, where they can retain their shape and remain ready to slip on at a moment’s notice.  Drawers are best reserved for thinner items that take the minimal amount of space.

Consider even stowing bulkier items under your bed.

Repurpose Your Junk

Sometimes, the fun of organizing is finding all the goodies you’ll need to keep your space clear, except buying organizers can sometimes add to the clutter. Try searching around the kitchen for old glass jars with lids and food containers before you dash out the door to buy anything.

Give giving them a makeover with a fresh coat of paint, stickers, and labels to remind you which items belong where. Check out how Jen at “I Heart Organizing” uses kitchen bowls and containers for her entryway drawer.
